Choose the numbering range
Physical PDF pages and displayed page numbers are different concepts. You can start numbering later in the document and still begin the visible sequence at 1 or another number.
Choose format and position
Common formats include a simple number, Page X, X of Y or a custom template. Position calculations need to account for page dimensions and text width.
Mixed page sizes
A PDF can mix portrait, landscape, Letter and A4 pages. Page-number placement should be calculated separately for each page.
