Why Use Our Merge PDF Tool?

Easy file ordering

Rearrange PDFs before merging so reports, chapters, forms, scans, and supporting documents appear in the correct sequence.

Local browser processing

Your selected PDF bytes are read by JavaScript in your browser. The application does not contain a PDF upload endpoint.

Original pages are copied

The merge operation copies existing PDF pages instead of turning every page into a screenshot, helping preserve vector content and selectable text.

Works across devices

Use a current browser on Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, or iPad. No separate PDF merger application is required.

What Happens When PDFs Are Merged?

When you select files, the tool reads them locally to identify the page count and create a lightweight first-page preview. The visible file list becomes the merge sequence. When you start the merge, a new PDF document is created in browser memory. Each source PDF is opened one at a time, its pages are copied into the destination document, and the copied pages are appended in the order shown on screen.

This approach is different from simply joining raw file bytes. A PDF has an internal object structure, page tree, cross-reference information, fonts, images, and other resources. A valid merger must create a coherent output document, not place one PDF file after another. The finished document is serialized as a new PDF Blob and made available through a temporary browser URL for download.

Common Reasons to Combine PDF Files

Merging is useful when several separate documents belong together. Students can combine assignment pages, appendices, or research material. Job applicants can join a cover letter, résumé, certificates, and supporting documents when a portal expects one upload. Businesses can combine invoices, receipts, signed pages, reports, meeting packs, and scanned records. Researchers may group chapters, figures, supplementary material, or reviewed sections into a single package.

How to Choose the Correct PDF Order

Before merging, check the sequence number shown on each card. Put the title or cover document first, followed by the main content, attachments, and appendices. For date-based documents, sort them chronologically unless the recipient requests another arrangement. After dragging a file, verify the sequence numbers again. Keyboard users can move any item one position at a time with the Move up and Move down buttons.

Does Merging PDFs Reduce Their Quality?

This tool does not intentionally rasterize or recompress pages during merging. Existing pages are copied into a new PDF, so normal text, vectors, page dimensions, orientation, and embedded images are generally retained. PDF is a complex format, however, and highly specialized features can behave differently when a document is rewritten. For unusual interactive forms, digital signatures, portfolios, advanced encryption, or uncommon embedded features, inspect the merged result before relying on it as an archival master.

Merge PDFs on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone

The merger runs as a web application, so you do not need a platform-specific installer. On a desktop computer, select files from local storage and drag cards with a mouse or trackpad. On phones and tablets, select PDFs through the device file picker and use touch reordering or the Move controls. Browser memory varies by device, which means very large collections may be more comfortable to process on a computer with more available memory.

Help

Troubleshooting Merge PDF Problems

Password-protected PDF

Encrypted files may not be readable by this browser merger. Unlock a PDF you are authorized to use, then add the unlocked copy. Try the Unlock PDF tool when available.

Damaged or unreadable PDF

If a file cannot be parsed, remove it and try another copy. A damaged file may need repair before it can be merged. See Repair PDF.

Large files or many pages

Client-side processing uses your device memory. Close unnecessary tabs, use a device with more memory, or merge in smaller batches if the browser runs out of resources.

Wrong file order

The tool merges according to the current visible order, not the original upload order. Reorder the cards before clicking Merge PDF.

Download did not start

Try the Download again button and check whether your browser blocks automatic downloads. The generated Blob remains available until you start over or leave the page.

Unsupported file selected

This tool accepts PDFs only. Renaming another file type to end in .pdf does not make it a valid PDF and will be rejected during validation.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I merge PDF files for free?

Yes. This page does not require an account or payment to perform the browser-based merge operation.

How many PDFs can I merge?

The tool does not impose a small fixed file-count limit. Practical capacity depends on the total file size, page complexity, available browser memory, and your device.

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No PDF upload request is used by this implementation. Your file bytes are read and merged locally in the browser. The page may make normal network requests for website assets and pinned JavaScript libraries.

Can I change the order before merging?

Yes. Drag the file cards on mouse or touch devices, or use Move up and Move down. The visible order is the order used to build the output.

Does merging reduce PDF quality?

The merger copies PDF pages rather than intentionally converting them to images. That generally preserves text and page graphics, although specialized PDF features should be checked after merging.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

Not when the encryption prevents the libraries from reading or copying the document. Unlock files you are authorized to access before merging them.

Can I merge PDFs on my phone?

Yes, in a current mobile browser. Very large files may need more memory than some phones can provide.

Why won't my PDF merge?

Common causes include corruption, password protection, unusual PDF structures, insufficient browser memory, or a browser that cannot load the required processing library.

Can landscape and portrait PDFs be merged together?

Yes. Pages are copied with their original dimensions and orientation, so one output PDF can contain both portrait and landscape pages.

What happens to my files after I close the page?

The selected files and generated download are held in the browser page's memory. Closing or reloading the page discards that in-memory state.
